Cleaning and Maintenance for Your CPAP Supplies

Cleaning and maintaining your CPAP equipment can, for new and experienced users, be a daunting topic. Remember how and when to clean your mask or machine can sometimes be difficult, so we've compiled a list of quick tips and advice on how to keep your CPAP equipment in the best possible shape.

Your CPAP Mask and Other Supplies

  • Clean your mask each morning. CPAP mask cushions are made of a delicate material called silicone. This material is great for contact with the face as it is very gentle on skin and non-irritating. Because of this, it can easily be damaged. Facial oils can breakdown the cushion material throughout the day, so be sure to wash your cushion each morning to prevent this damage.
  • Wash your CPAP mask and cushions with a mild dish detergent mixed in equal parts with warm water. Never use harsh chemicals or cleaning supplies on your equipment. There are cleaning solutions and convenient wipes available for CPAP cleaning.
  • Don't forget that most CPAP masks are designed to be replaced between 3 and 6 months. Older masks are not as effective as new.
  • Don't forget to clean your CPAP tubing! Tubing is also designed to be replaced, and usually it only has a 3 month lifespan. Clean it one time per week by submerging it in the same mixture you use to clean your mask.

Your Machine

  • Most CPAP machines have an expected lifespan of up to 5 years. Some machines will last longer than that, and some will fail before that timeline is completed. Most machines are covered by a 1 year manufacturer's warranty, so machine issues within the first year are often covered.
  • Every CPAP machine has a machine-specific filter that needs to be cleaned and/or replaced regularly. Check your machine manual for more details on your filter. Some machines come equipped with more than one type of filter. Some filters can be cleaned, while others must be replaced.
  • CPAP machines don't have to be cleaned (and should never be exposed to water), but a light dusting with a damp cloth can be beneficial. Check the air intake area on the back of the machine to make sure it is not clogged with dust or hindered by curtains or other objects that may be near your machine.

Your Humidifier

  • The best way to keep your humidifier in good shape is to read and follow the instructions that come with your unit and to always use distilled water in the humidifier chamber. Using tap water will greatly reduce the lifespan of your humidifier as minerals, metals, or chlorine in tap water can harm the heating element or chamber.
  • Regular cleaning of the humidifier chamber is very important. Chambers should be cleaned after each use with mild dish detergent and warm water. Check your user manual before putting your humidifier chamber in the dishwasher (some are dishwasher-safe, some are not).
  • Humidifier chambers are also meant to be replaced regularly. The lifespan for most chambers is 6 months.
